Trojan Dropper (generic description)
A trojan dropper is usually a standalone program that drops different type of standalone malware (trojans, worms, backdoors) to a system. A typical trojan dropper is a file that contains a few other files compressed inside its body. When a trojan dropper is run, it extracts all files it contains to some folder (usually temporary folder) and runs all of them simultaneously. In many cases trojan droppers contain innocent files or multimedia files to disguise malicious activities.
Trojan droppers are usually created by special programs called 'joiners'. These programs allow to customize functionalities of a trojan dropper and to add as many files as needed into the package.
Some trojan droppers extract components directly to memory and activate them there. In this case anti-virus software is not able to detect dropped malware, so detection of the whole trojan dropper package is added.
Most famous trojan droppers: ExeBundle, ExeStealth, Small, ZomJoiner.
Adware/Spyware Issues
Very often on-line advertisment companies use trojan droppers to hiddenly drop their adware/spyware components or downloaders to users' computers. That is why it is recommended to scan an affected computer with a spyware remover, for example F-Secure Anti-Spyware. There also exist several good third-party utilities to clean adware/spyware components and downloaders from infected computers.
Automatic Disinfection
Usually standalone malware (backdoors, worms, trojans, etc.) is automatically removed by F-Secure Anti-Virus (FSAV) starting from version 5.40. Malware files get automatically renamed by FSAV, so they can not be started any more. In some rare cases, when automatic disinfection is not possible, a user can select disinfection action by him/herself to make FSAV rename or delete an infected file.
